Maxwell is a small town located in northeastern New Mexico, United States. It is situated in Colfax County on the Santa Fe Trail, approximately 135 miles northeast of Albuquerque. The town has a population of fewer than 300 people and covers an area of around 0.6 square miles. It is known for its history as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail and as the site of the Battle of Cieneguilla during the Apache Wars. Today, the town has a few businesses, including a gas station, a post office, and a bar. Its economy is largely dependent on agriculture and ranching. The town is also home to the Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge, which provides habitat for migratory birds, pronghorns, and other wildlife.
